Also known as Golden Passion Fruit, the granadilla is the sweetest of the Passifloras. Its origin ranges from central Mexico through Central America and Western South America and is the most common species of Passiflora. Granadillas are grown in tropical climates between 1,600 and 2,000 meters of altitude and are available year-round. They have a sweet-tart fresh flavor, and are known worldwide as a natural dessert on their own. The fruit is usually cracked open and the pulp and seeds are consumed out-of-hand. When used at the table the fruit is cut in half and the contents are eaten with a spoon. They can also be used in cold drinks and sherbets.
