General Information
India with its diverse agro-climatic zones produces almost all kinds of farm produce in abundance which make farm based sectors to grow irrespective of developments in the macro-economic scenario. Among farm based sectors, food processing and value addition is one of the largest sectors in India in terms of production, growth, consumption, and export. The turnover of the total food market is approximately Rs. 250,000 crores (US$ 69.4 billion) out of which value-added food products comprise Rs.80,000 crores (US$ 22.2 billion). The sector has been growing over 10 percent consistently from last couple of years. The ever increasing population of India visa-vise agricultural growth poses challenges to the valu addition and food processing sector. While on one hand there is need to increase crop productivity on the other hand there is need to bring corresponding investments in processing facilities.
Due to lack of proper post-harvest handling facilities and lack of adequate critical infrastructure facilities along the supply chain, a huge quantity of farm produce gets wasted. It is now increasingly becoming evident that only a vibrant food processing sector can lead to reduction in wastages, remunerative farm gate prices thereby increasing the income levels of farmers and increase in employment opportunities. Such a strategy would also be essential to meet the twin national objectives of "inclusive growth" and "food security".
Though, India has made significant progress in terms of creating refrigerated warehouses, it still is far behind when compared with major horticulture producers of the world in terms of storage space available for F&V produced. When compared with world standards in respect of Cargo movement through cold chain, India is still far behind.
In this context the food processing sector has opportunity for large investments in developing infrastructure, technologies, skills, product development, refrigeration, etc. Realizing prospects for immense growth potential in the food processing sector, ASSOCHAM is proposing Summit cum Exhibition on Food Processing Agribusiness and Cold Chain with following objectives and focus areas.
