Function: 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-hydroxy-l-tryptophan (abbreviated as 5-HTP or 5 HTP) is a compound produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan which is converted into serotonin, an important neurotransmitter. As a precursor of serotonin and the hormone melatonin, 5 HTP supports the central nervous system's synthesis of serotonin as the intermediate metabolite of L-tryptophan. Serotonin levels play a key role in the regulation of mood, appetite, sexual behavior and aggression.
