Like its more familiar cousin Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng), the root of American ginseng is used medicinally. The plant grows wild in shady forests in the northern and central United States, as well as in parts of Canada. It is cultivated in the United States, China, and France.
Active Constituents
American ginseng contains various kinds of ginsenosides, such as ginsenoside Ro, Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rg1 and pseudoginsenoside F11 (Rf). Rf is the main difference to distinguish American ginseng from ginseng. Furthermore, American ginseng also contains 18 kinds of amino acids including arginine and aspartate. Ginsenoside improves and enhances the memory. It was found in animal tests that ginsenoside(500 or 100mg. Kg+, PO x Td) functioned against the deteriorated memory, which had been caused by M-choline blockage, suggesting its cholin-like effects. Meanwhile, ginsenosides may significantly improve the consolidated memory (long-term damaged memory) induced by lgc.
