Areca Nut or Betel Nut is the seed of areca palm. This is one of the important commercial crops in India. It is also grown in Bangladesh, Japan, Sri Lanka, south China, the East Indies, the Philippines, and parts of Africa. The Areca nut may be used fresh, dried, or cured by boiling, baking, or roasting. Areca nut has Tannins arecatannin and Gallic Acid, Terpineol, Lignin, various Saline substances. It has three main Alkaloids — Arecoline, Arecaidine and Guvacine — all of which have Vasoconstricting properties. But the Areca Nuts has both pros and cons to human health and has always been suggested to be used as minimum as possible and only for the benefits for good health. I wish to share some of the Pros and Cons of Areca nut as below:

Pros
- Reduces bad mouth smell
- Strengthen the tooth
- Powdered Areca nut will work for people having stomach worm problem
Drinking a glass of milk mixed with ½ spoon Areca nut powders and honey will help to overcome this    problem.
- Toothache, Throat Itching: Take ½ liter of water. Mix 4 spoons of Areca nut powder and boil this mixture in    low flame for 30 minutes. Than filter the mixture.
Drinking this decoction will cure toothache, throat itching.
- Chewing the nut stimulates the flow of saliva to aid digestion. Betel Nuts has also been used to stimulate  the appetite. People with dry mouth problem can use the betel nut as it stimulates saliva flow.

Cons
As shared earlier Betel nut needs to be used as minimal as possible in daily health life.
Betel nut contains three major Alkaloids: Arecoline, Pilocarpine, and Muscarine which increases the risks of ill health.
Betel nut is used in a manner similar to the western use of tobacco or caffeine.

- Excess use of Betel nut has a risk of getting pharyngeal cancer (cancer of the back of the throat).
- Areca nut is not recommended for those with heart conditions.
- Regular use of Areca nut, in time, stains the mucosa, gums, and teeth.
