Part of the gourd family, Bitter Melon is a vegetable that is oblong in shape and resembles a cucumber with an undulating, warty surface. The young fruit is emerald green, turning to orange-yellow when ripe. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an appetite stimulant, a treatment for gastrointestinal infection, and to lower blood sugar in diabetics.
