From the name you would think the roast would come from the rear of the hog, but that is not the case. It is cut from the shoulder. During the Revolutionary War Boston had many butchers and was a supplier of meat to the Armies in the area. The butchers would pack the roast in a brine solution in a large wooden barrel called a Butt. The guy ordering the meat would say, Send me some of those Boston Butts. That is how it got its name. So much for history.
The roast is great with vegetables in a crock-pot, a roasting pan or makes mouth-watering barbeque. It is a bone-in roast that weighs about 4 pounds.
