BRASIL NUTS

The Brazil Nut is a large-sized dried fruit; the tree which produces it, Bertholletia excelsa, can grow up to 40 meters tall. The fruit is round and a dark brown color and resemble a giant coconut with its hard, woody shell. It can be found in the forests of the Amazon in Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. For centuries, it was a key staple in the diet of indigenous tribes, eaten both raw and blended with roots such as the case with leite de castaña. The first historical mention of this product date back to 1969, when Spanish officials were forced to use the fruit to feed their troops. The first to import this product were traders from the Netherlands, at the beginning of the 17th century.
