Goji berries grow on an evergreen shrub found in temperate and subtropical regions in China, Mongolia and in the Himalayas in Tibet. They are in the nightshade ( Solonaceae ) family. Goji berries are usually found dried. They are shriveled red berries that look like red raisins.

The polysaccharides in wolfberry, one of which is a hybrid molecule that contains vitamin C, induce early cell death and inhibit rapid reproduction of cancer cells. The vitamin C-polysaccharide molecule demonstrated the ability to inhibit cervical cancer in a tissue culture study published in the April 2011 issue of "Cell Biology and Toxicology." Researchers concluded that wolfberry offers potential as a dietary supplement for the prevention of cervical cancer.
