Calcium and Inulin - a powerful team
Calcium is important for healthy bones and teeth.
Calcium and inulin are the two main ingredients of our Calcium Inulin Granulate.
Inulin or inulin-type fructans are a mixture of various poly- and oligosaccharides which are derived from plants such as chicory. They function amongst other things as dietary fibre.
Calcium is an essential element for all biological organisms. Its most important function in the human body is the development and maintenance of bones and teeth. Numerous other vital functions also depend on calcium.
Malnutrition is the main cause of calcium deficiency, but increased calcium requirements during pregnancy, growth phases or adolescence can also lead to deficiency.
A balanced diet provides the body with adequate amounts of calcium
The simplest way to take in sufficient calcium is with one's diet. As a result of "modern" eating habits, however, the amount of calcium taken in daily is often insufficient. In this case it is recommended taking either a dietary supplement or special calcium-enriched foodstuffs to cover the requirements, whereby the bioavailability of calcium from foodstuffs and dietary supplements can be very varied.
It depends for example on the presence of other constituents which either promote or reduce the absorption of calcium. On average only 20 to 40% of calcium taken in with the diet is absorbed.
Inulin improves the body's calcium absorption
Inulin is obtained from the cichory root (Cichorium intybus).
Current scientific studies have shown that inulin-type fructans increase calcium absorption in the body and subsequently also improve the mineralization of bones 1-4.
We have utilised this knowledge, and in cooperation with the Belgian Orafti S.A., have developed a granulate from Orafti's BeneoTM Synergy 1 and our tri-calcium citrate- 4-hydrate. This combination constitutes a uniquely good source of bioavailable calcium!
Our Calcium Inulin Granulate is a white, odourless, slightly sweet-tasting granulate which consist to 65% of BeneoTM Synergy1 and to 35% of our tri-calcium citrate- 4-hydrate. It can be used as a dietary supplement and - observing the RDA for calcium ? can even be consumed directly in unmixed form. Further, Calcium Inulin Granulate can be added to baking mixtures and dry ingredients for confectionery or dairy products, to cereals and cereal bars or used in the production of chewable tablets.
