A small evergreen tree, to 20 m. Leaves coriaceous, opposite or sub-opposite, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, 10-15 x 3-6 cm, shortly and bluntly acuminate, entire, base cuneate, glossy above, glaucous beneath; with 3 conspicuous nearly parallel veins arising from near the base, leaf-tip often curved; petioles short-stalked, 1.5-3 cm. Leaves bright pink when young in spring, aromatic when crushed. Flowers pale yellowish, in terminal and axillary branched clusters about as long as the leaves. Fruit black, succulent, ovoid, 1-1.2 cm borne on enlarged perianth cup with lower part of segments persisting as short lobes.
Uses:
Ayurveda: Plant is considered to be used in paralytic conditions, piles, vomiting, anorexia, sinusitis. Leaf is useful in scabies, cough, hemoptysis, nose defect, gout, oedema, skin disease, diseases of anus, heart troubles.
Bark extract is used in treatment of intestinal disorders and dysentery. It is also used in mouth disease, stomach pain, diarrhoea, gastritis, vomiting, insomnia, toothache, scorpion sting, sinusitis and syphilis.
Making Essential Oil:
Oil is considered to be used externally in the treatment of rheumatism, neuralgia, headache and toothache, and internally used in dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea and vomiting, gonorrhoea, tuberculosis and enteric fever.
