cashew nuts are the stone fruits of the cashew tree, which grows to a height

Commercial and General Information

The raw cashew nuts shall conform to certain basic specifications based on different parameters which are more fully described below :

(a) Count : The count is indicated by the number of Raw Cashewnuts per Kg. The Number of counts of Raw Cashewnuts usually ranges from 140 nuts per kg.  To 240 nuts per kg. ( i.e. 180 - 200 etc.) or by maximum ( i.e. Maximum of 220 nuts per kg. Etc., )

(b) Defective : Defective nuts can arise by being  spotted, void, immature, deceased, rotten or buy partial damage. The defectives can be described as a total of all the aforesaid items or specified  individually.

(c) Moisture : Raw Cashewnuts inherently contain moisture. The moisture can range from 5% to 14%. However, a higher content of moisture is likely to increase defective / rotten / damaged nuts even in transit. It is  advised that the moisture content shall be to a maximum of 10% at the time of loading but the optimum would be between 6% and 8%.

(d) Admixture Raw  Cashewnut being a horticultural crop is likely to have admixture. The seller  shall specify clearly what percentage by weight shall be the maximum admixture of the consignment at destination. It is advisable that nuts are cleaned  thoroughly after collection and dried before bagging.

(e) Packing : Raw  Cashewnuts shall be packed in sound jute gunnies, preferably new or once used and should withstand the conditions of transportation by sea. Any form of insecure packing is likely to lead to spillage in-transit which will result in  loss of weight as also damage to the nuts.

(f) Phytosanitary Certificate  : As Raw Cashewnut is a horticultural product, it is essential that a Phytosanitary Certificate from the country of origin is available which is issued by a Government Authority.

(g) Shipping : The seller must specify clearly the mode of shipping. The mode of transport may be by break-bulk on a ship which is classified A1 by the Lloyd's Register of shipping. The seller  should also specify if he is shipping by container and it is necessary to ensure  that it is by ventilated containers only. The seller should also ascertain from  the shipping company, whether the cargo is likely to be transhipped.  Transhipment will not be allowed in case of break-bulk cargo and may be allowed  in the case of Containers
.

(h) Weight Certificate : Weight Certificate duly authenticated by a  competent authority as insisted on by the buyer is an important document required at the time of import of Raw Cashewnuts.

(i) Payment Conditions : Payment is usually by irrevocable Letter of Credit. Buyer will specify whether payment will be on sight or on usance basis. The seller may offer credit for 30  - 180 days depending on his ability to do so. If the condition is on landed  weight and landed quality basis then Letter of Credit will be drawn to a certain percentage (i.e. 90% of the value of invoice ) and balance 10% will be payable at destination after inspection and certification. Invoice value will be reduced  on pro-rata basis if there is a difference between quality at destination when compared to quality at origin.

(j) Packing List : A Packing List should be available indicating number of packages, marks thereon which will clearly  identify the Cargo to the buyers. Particular care about this should be taken if the shipper has more than one consignee at the destination port.

(k)  Certificate of Origin : Certificate of Origin is required from a competent  authority as a part of the documents.

(l) Fumigation Certificate : As Raw  Cashewnut is a horticultural produce, it needs to be fumigated before despatch.  The recommended fumigant is Aluminum Phosphide.

(m) Certification :  Certification of quality at port of loading is essential. Usually, the well accepted Certifying agency is SGS international

(n) Insurance :  Insurance is usually covered by buyers. However, if insurance is offered by sellers, then claim should be specified clearly including surveyor at  destination and the office which settles the claims.

(o) Other standard documents like Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading as specified in the Letter of  Credit, Certificate about shipping line etc., will be informed at the time of  opening of Letter of Credit
.
