cherries originate, most probably, from Kerasounta, a small town in Asia Minor, and are said to have been named after it (the Greek word for 'Cherry' is 'kerasi').

Their cultivation in Italy and the rest of Europe started later. In Greece, they are produced in Pieria, Edessa, Rodopi, Grevena, Ayia Larisa area and other parts of northern Greece, and they are known for their outstanding quality. In our country, cherries are usually harvested during late spring and early summer.

Cherries have numerous beneficial properties for the human body:

  • They combat mental fatigue. cherry consumption is recommended to students during exam periods, at quantities around 2-3 kg per week.
  • They reduce the levels of total cholesterol in the blood.
  • They strengthen our body's natural defenses against diseases, while possessing antiseptic properties against inflammations and infections.
  • Metabolized, they supply the body with heat energy. They are rich in iron and are recommended in cases of anemia.
  • They detoxify the liver, the gall bladder and the glands, but their detoxifying action can be extended to all body organs. Moreover, they enhance urinary system function, as they have both diuretic and digestive properties.
  • Given their content in anthocyanins, cherries contribute to the elimination of carcinogenic substances.
They also increase insulin production by pancreatic cells. Thus, cherry consumption, besides cancer, is likely to also help in the prevention of sugar diabetes.
