17 varieties of chestnuts including 12 imported varieties are cultivated mainly in the central and southern regions of Korea. Chestnuts are harvested from September to October, and exported from September to December. In 1991 chestnut production totaled 89,747 tons, of which 34,539 tons were exported. Peeled chestnuts shared 90% of all exports. 98% is exported to Japan and the remaining is shipped to the United States, Canada, the Philippines and Saudi Arabia
