DEFECT DEFINITIONS:

Major:

Units, which are hard, shriveled or exhibiting dark discolouration, pest damage or disease considered to seriously affect eating quality or appearance. eg Overblanched or seed peas.

Embedded stones are considered a major defect.

Mud peas where the mud covers >60% of unit.

Minor:

Units (excluding desiccated peas) which are blond or exhibiting discolouration, pest damage or disease considered not to seriously affect eating quality or appearance.
Blonde units which are yellow to white in colour.

Mud peas where the mud covers <60% of unit.

Splits:

Each of the following definitions of a split represents one unit:

A whole pea from which a cotyledon or a large portion thereof has become separated.

Two detached cotyledons.

Pieces of cotyledon aggregating the equivalent of an average size cotyledon.

A whole detached skin or portions of detached skin aggregating the equivalent of an average size whole skin.

EVM:

(Extraneous vegetable matter)

Succulent vegetable material common to the pea plant, such as leaves and pods.

An aggregate area of not more than 13x13mm represents one unit.

Material such as stems, common the pea plant or from other plants which are of similar colour to frozen peas.  Each piece represents one unit.

Non-harmful or non-poisonous types of berries such as solanum nigrum, thistle buds and dandelion buds which are of similar colour to frozen peas.  Each piece represents one unit.

Foreign matter

Eg. Metal, glass, wood, insect, animal and harmful or objectionable vegetable matter.
