Chondroitin sulfate, a viscous liquid polysaccharide found in the connective tissues of animals, is present in large quantities in cartilage tissues. It is also found in the skin, tendons, and blood vessel , where it functions as an intercellular cement. The function of chondroitin sulfate in the human body is extremely wide-ranging. Among its main roles are (1) restoring skin to a youthful condition; (2) preserving elasticity and smoothness of tissues such as joints and ligaments; (3) acting on the eyes to preserve the transparency and elasticity of the corneas and crystalline lenses; (4) supporting bone growth and preventing osteoporosis by aiding calcium absorption . Chondroitin is therefore used in a wide range of fields including medicine, health maintenance, and beauty. Chondroitin sulfate is synthesizedwithin the body, but its volume drops as a person ages. While the recommended daily intake for an adult is 400 mg, a middle-aged person's body manufactures only about 20 mg per day. Supplementation is therefore needed.
