Coenzyme Q10 is a coenzyme located in the mitochondria
throughout the body and highly abundant in the respiratory
chain. Co-Q10 is one of the main components responsible
for the transformation of food into ATP (adenosine
triphosphate), the energy that the body requires to run.
Co-Q10 is also an antioxidant, protecting cell mitochondria
from damage caused by free radicals.
In young and healthy people, the body can produce Co-Q10
on its own. As one ages, however levels of Co-Q10 are
found to decline in the blood and heart. Degenerative
diseases of the heart, brain and nervous system has been
associated with reduced levels of Co-Q10. Coenzyme Q10
can be considered a conditionally required nutrient
