Cordyceps sinensis are found primarily in the high altitudes of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau in China that parasitizes moth caterpillars. In the fall, the fungal mycelia infect the caterpillar, which then kills it by early summer of the following year, releasing spores from the fruiting body (the stroma).
