In 1932, Bordeaux brokers - under the dual authority of the Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture - officially recognised 444 Crus Bourgeois. As a result of WWII and of the 1956 freeze, however, their numbers thereafter fell to 94.
The exceptional rise of Bordeaux wines in the 80s and 90s pushed the Crus Bourgeois once more to the forefront and underscored the need to elaborate an official framework for these wines.
Since 2007, the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc has been working on a new "Reconnaissance Crus Bourgeois" project, the concrete stages of which were launched in early 2009 in order that the first "Reconnaissance Crus Bourgeois" certifications be delivered in early 2010 for the 2008 vintage.
An economic asset for the Médoc
The Médoc Crus Bourgeois are of significant economic importance in Bordeaux: they produce nearly 40 million bottles sold worldwide, employ 2,400 people and account for 40% of the vines in the Médoc.
