Molecular Formula: Cu(NO3)olecular Weight: 241.60
Physicochemical Properties: Cupric nitrate has three kinds of hydrates-trihydrate, hexahydrate and nonahydrate. The trihydrate is a dark blue columnar crystal. Specific Density: 2.05,Melting Point: 114.5??C. It will be degraded into an insoluble basic salt - Cu(NO3)2l Cu(OH)2 when heated at 170ºC, and then convert into copper oxide. It is apt to dissolve in water and ethanol. The aqueous solution is acidity and the hydrate is easy in moisture absorption. Cupric nitrate is a strong oxidizer which can cause burning and explosive if heated, rubbed or impacted with carbon powder, sulfur or other combustible materials.
Applications and Usages: Cupric nitrate is used as catalyst, oxidizer, activating agent for luminescent powder, and photosensitive resistance materials.
