Trade size packaging for Delta mussels still reflects the traditional Zeeland method of using jute sacks, which are sewn closed by hand. When it is exposed to water, jute shrinks and the sack closes even more tightly around the mussels, preventing them from opening. This procedure improves the quality of the mussels. Labels are attached to the jute sacks showing the size and "meat" weight of the mussels.
