Faugeres wine region
Faugeres is an appellation for red, white and rosé wines from an area around the town of Faugeres, in the central Languedoc region of southern France. white Wines have been included under the appellation only since the vintage of 2005, and represent just a tiny fraction of production. Similarly, the rosé wines are far outweighed by the reds.
The style of the local wines is encapsulated in the grape varieties used here. The classic Rhone varieties Syrah, Grenache and Mourvedre are combined with the Mediterranean varieties Cinsaut and Lladoner Pelut. The rather unfashionable Carignan is also used to a limited extent, but is being phased out in the local vineyards. The result is a style of wine that is somewhere between the southern Rhone Valley and Corbieres.
White Faugeres wines are made predominantly from Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne and Vermentino. However, Bourboulenc, Maccabeu and Clairette are also permitted, continuing the Rhone/Mediterranean feel.
The Faugeres landscape is characterized by a division between the higher-altitude areas (which produce the better wines) and those on the coastal plains and to the south (which produce mostly lower-quality wines sold under various Vin de Pays titles). The climate is definitively Mediterranean, being only 20 miles (33km) away from the coast at the furthest point.
The area also produces Eau de Vie under the title Eau-de-Vie de Faugeres .
