Vermiculite is a type of naturally occurring mineral that expands into long, worm-like strands when heat is applied through a process called exfoliation. When in its expanded form, the material has a low density and thermal conductivity. This makes it useful as a lightweight aggregate in construction, a thermal insulation filler and a soil amendment.
