When the mushroom crop has finished the compost is sterilized using steam so as to kill any mushroom disease spores. The compost temperature is raised up to 70*C using steam and is held there for 3-4 hours and then cooled down to 20 *C. At this stage the material is removed from the growing room. This material is called Spent Mushroom Compost. There are still a lot of nutrients left in this material and it is a very good fertilizer for agricultural crops. It is also a very good soil conditioner as it has a high organic matter content.
