• Herring was at it's peak from around late 19th century to early 20 century in Rumoi, Hokkaido. Large schools of herring gathered crowds of seagulls over the Japanese Sea in huge numbers, the surface of the ocean would become a milky white from the amount of milt in the water. 
• There would been seethed with fishermen’s dancing song and people who were carrying basket on shoulder around with filled herring. 
• The local people would go to the coast to support the fisherman when the fish arrived, and in return the local people could return home with as many herring as their hands could hold as their rewards. 
• The herring pies cookies were produced to depict and commemorate those days.
