3 Winning Strategies for China Food & Drink brands in International Markets
by Global Food and Drink expert, Hayden Filer.
Strategy 1.
Invest in core markets, export to others …
You will really like this strategy – it’s aggressive and it works! Its also posted on our website and can be downloaded at http://www.foodndrinkslive.com. With this strategy, you invest in building your brands in large and strategically important markets such as China, or the United States, and fund the investment from profits which you make from export markets. As a general rule, I advise my clients to build 5 export markets for every 1 investment market. Export markets can then be upgraded to investment markets once financial metrics have been achieved. This strategy keeps the profit and loss statement healthy, and supports sustainable global growth.

Strategy 2.
Build a repeatable formula …
Before you go rushing off on a quest for global domination, check to make sure you have built a “success formula” in your core market. Once this is achieved, your “success formula” can then be repeated with relative ease in other international markets. But wait. There are 195 countries, which ones do you go to first? I always recommend entering new markets that are “highly attractive and winnable” first. It’s make sense right? Typically, these are large markets with high category growth, and acceptable entry barriers. Strategy 3.
Understand your resources and capability…
This is a rule rather than a strategy, but I am including it here because it can make or break a strategy. Let me explain what I mean by using an example. I recently did a consultation for a Food company that had aspirations to grow its annual turnover from USD$15Million to USD$1.5Billion in 5 years using an export strategy, and a small inexperienced team! The financial objective was fine, there is nothing wrong with wanting to create a billion dollar multi-national company – but in this case, the time frame needed to be extended, and a new business, investment and organizational strategy developed to make it feasible. I talk about this project in detail at my seminar in Guangzhou, Qingdao, Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chongqing in three weeks time. Hope you can make it!
