Dragon fruit is considered a potential product of Vietnam for exporting. This type of fruit is grown in Binh Thuan, Long An, Tien Giang,…

Vietnamese dragon fruit is famous for 2 types including white flesh and red flesh. While white flesh dragon fruit is a soft fruit, which has a slightly sweet and cool taste, red flesh dragon fruit is a new, strange, delicious, and very nutritious product. The seeds like black sesame seeds are mixed into the flesh, and the fleshy layer is usually consumed in the form of fresh fruit, with a sweet aroma. Red flesh dragon fruit is currently very popular in the fruit market in Vietnam and other countries around the world.

Dragon fruit has a variety of health benefits. This product contains Vitamin C and B3 to cool off our body. Furthermore, dragon fruit is rich in Vitamin A which is essential for retina, brightness and vision of the eye. Tiny seeds have fat and protein content. Dragon fruit is able to improve cardiovascular health by increasing good cholesterol. Besides that, iron and protein content prevent anemia and protect the stomach wall, support the immune system, and make skin beautiful. On the other hand, the soluble fiber supports weight loss process, lowers blood sugar, strengthens the bowel and prevents colon cancer.

Fresh dragon fruit is treated with vapor heat treatment (VHT) when the core temperature of the fruit reaches 46.8°C or is higher for at least 40 minutes, with a relative humidity of 90% or more. After being treated with cold water, dragon fruit is cooled in about 10 minutes, which is followed by forced air cooling to bring the fruit temperature back to room temperature. This technology helps to handle an amount of pests and diseases harmful to fruits after being harvested, to reduce the rate of transpiration, endogenous ethylene production, respiratory intensity,… thereby lasting a longer shelf life, storage time, decreasing post-harvest losses, and satisfying the standards for export.

According to Tridge, the largest consumers of Vietnamese dragon fruit are China (80%), United States of America, and France. In addition, Vietnamese dragon fruit has also been exported to many other countries globally, such as Hong Kong, Netherlands, Thailand, Canada, India, Australia and UAE.
