No other fruit is more synonymous with the tropics  than papaya. But its origin, however, is rather obscure. Many believe the papaya may be a fusion of two or more species of Carica, a fruit native to Mexico and central America. Today, the fruit is cultivated everywhere throughout the tropical world, including Malaysia where it is grown chiefly in Johor, Perak and Selangor.

There are two varieties available here. The "Exotica" is the most popular, with an orange-red flesh and high sugar content. It is usually weights between 600g to 800g per piece. Another variety called "Hong kong" also have a good taste. With its long shape with both ends of the fruit in the same shape and size, this papaya have an average weight of 1 to 2kg per piece.

This fruit is commonly eaten fresh but its also can be processed into juice, puree, pickle, candy, jam and jelly.
