Fucoxanthin is an oxygenated carotenoid available in different types of edible algae, such as Laminaria japonica, Undaria pinnatifida, and Hijikia fusiformis. It is brown, as is known to give algae its characteristic coloring. Fucoxanthin absorbs light primarily from blue green to yellow green part of visible spectrum, significantly in the range of 450 to 510 nm.

With its high-active and enriched-electron polyene carbon chain, Fucoxanthin possesses the property of anti-peroxiding free radicals, which protect cells and tissues from the damaging of free radicals. Some metabolic and nutritional studies carried at Hokkaido University indicated that fucoxanthin show antiobesity effect through UCP1 expression in white adipose tissues. In other studies, fucoxanthin exerted an antiproliferative effect by inducing cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase in human colon carcinoma cells. Concomitantly, this compound has been shown to have growth-inhibitory effects on various cell lines, e.g., prostate cancer PC-3, DU 145, and LNCaP cells, leukemia HL-60 cells, colon cancer HT-29, Caco-2, and DLD-1 cells, and neuroblastoma GOTO cells.

  • Antiobesity test results of Fucoxanthin

Mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is usually expressed only in brown adipose tissue (BAT) and a key molecule for metabolic thermogenesis to avoid an excess of fat accumulation. Howerer, there is little BAT in adult humans. Therefore, UCP1 expression in tissues other than BAT is expected to reduce abdominal fat. Here, we show reduction of abdominal white adipose tissue (WAT) weights in rats and mice by feeding lipids from edible seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida.

The Undaria lipids mainly consisted of glycolipids and seaweed carotenoid, fucoxanthin. In the fucoxanthin-fed mice, WAT weight significantly decreased and UCP1 was clearly expressed in the WAT, while there was no difference in WAT weight and lttle expression of UCP1 in the glycolipids-fed mice. These results indicate that fucoxanthin upregulates the expression of UCP1 in WAT, which may contribute to reducing WAT weight.
