Goldenberries are so named beacuse, at optimal ripeness, its husks (sepals) really look golden at dusk. We intentionally use the name goldenberries, to differentiate the Chilean fruit from the one produced at other countries: the species, Physalis peruviana, is the same, but their taste, fragance and organoleptic features are quite different from those of
uchuva or
Gooseberries , because of our unique comparative advantages in climate, soil and water.
This fruit is indigenous to the Andean region of South America, which is also the cradle of the Inca culture, peaking at some 600 years ago: that's why we also call them The Lost Fruit of the Incas.
