Pikkas Wheat&Grain juice is a brand with a history.
Pikkas is the name of a Roman man, born in 630 in the Middle East. Some say he was born in Damascus, some say he was born in Jeruzalem and that his family later took him to Damascus where he grew up. He grew up in a period in which the Roman Empire was losing territory. In 641, when Pikkas was still a child, Herakleios Konstantinos, who is known as Constans II became the new Emperor of Byzantium. He had to defend the Empire against the Arab army led by general Moe'awija. In 659 he was forced to sign a peace treaty with the Arabs and the Empire kept losing more and more territory to the Arabs who were spreading the word of Islam. Pikkas whose full name was Phillippikkas, grew up in these times of political and religious changes.
In this period there was also a lot of alcohol abuse. There were breweries everywhere and people were drunk most of the time. There were parties every night, with drinking and dancing and women were being harassed by drunk men. There were also many robberies and killings under the influence of alcohol.
Islam forbade the use of alcohol because of its damage to health and its intoxicating effect. But the non-Muslims continued drinking and brewing alcohol. Pikkas' grandfather was also a brewer as was Pikkas' father. And they taught young Pikkas the art of brewing so he could take over the family brewery one day. When Pikkas was nearly twenty years old he converted to Islam. After converting he stopped drinking alcohol because his religion forbade it.

Being a fond lover of the taste of beer, he wanted to find a way to make a drink with the same taste as beer but without the alcohol. Being an experienced brewer he started experimenting. After some experiments he came up with a way to make a drink of wheat and grain which contained absolutely no alcohol. Initially he started making the drink in small quantities only for himself but when friends tasted it, they asked him if he could produce more of it. So he started producing more of the drink for his friends. When his father died, Pikkas was left as owner of the family brewery. He then started producing his non-alcoholic drink in larger quantities and started selling it to Muslims all over. It became more and more popular among Muslims. And non-Muslims found that a cup of the non-alcoholic drink worked great against a hangover.
The drink, which became known as 'the drink of Pikkas' was widely introduced in the Middle East in the years 660-670.

In the year 1988 we decided to bring back 'the drink of Pikkas'. We started research to know more about this man who introduced the first non alcoholic beer to the world and about the way he made his drink.
