African Griffonia seeds are native to the West African countries of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Cote d 'Ivoire and Togo. In West Africa, Griffonia seeds have a long history of folk medicine. The leaves and juice are used to treat trauma, bladder and kidney problems. Griffonia seeds are also used to treat diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and are best known for their antibacterial and libido boosting properties.
Due to the narrow distribution range, 5-HTP is found to be abundant only in the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia. In view of the good activity of 5-HTP, it has been sold as a dietary supplement in Europe and US in recent years. However, the limited seed resources of Griffonia seeds in Africa, coupled with a large number of collection, make the production cost of 5-HTP high.
Recent studies have found that 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), the main active ingredient of Griffonia seed extract, is an amino acid substance and a precursor of the inhibitory neurotransmitter 5-HT, which can improve the concentration of 5-HT in brain, inhibit depression, promote the synthesis of melatonin and improve sleep quality.
