Applications:
Since the heme iron in porcine blood is rich in organic iron, with an absorption rate of over 90%, and it has no resistance, residue and toxic effects, it can play an excellent effect of iron supplementation if adding it to animal feed:
1. It can take advantage of Protein-peptide absorption channel directly to avoid competition with other mineral elements. So, its bioavailability is significantly higher of than other iron-enrich agents. Adding heme iron into piglets’ and sows’ feed, it can be effective in preventing anemia, and enhancing the blood-forming function of animals to promote their growth (Hunan Agricultural University, 2007);
2. Heme is able to provide necessary amino acids for animals, and iron and other trace elements, which are easy to be absorbed by the body. Thereby, it can improve animals’ blood-forming function and their fur traits (Sichuan Agricultural University, 2008).
In the meat products industry, heme can be an alternative of traditional nitrite color fixatives. Adding heme into ham and red-sausage products, the product section shall be uniform in color, fresh and attractive with pleasing and pure taste. (Northeast Agricultural University, 2008)
