What is pomegranate?
Pomegranate, (Punica granatum L in Latin), belongs to the family Punicaceae which
includes only one genus and two species. The tree is native from Iran to the Himalayas
in northern India and has been cultivated since ancient times throughout the
Mediterranean region of Asia, Africa and Europe.
Pomegranate offers abundant benefits for the cardiovascular system by preventing
damage to arterial walls, promoting healthy blood pressure levels, improving blood flow
to the heart, and preventing or reversing atherosclerosis.
Pomegranate may benefit people with diabetes and those at risk for the disease. It
helps lower after-meal blood sugar levels and protects the cardiovascular system from
diabetes-induced damage.
pomegranate shows promise in killing prostate cancer cells, whether the cells are hormone-sensitive
or not. Pomegranate also helped halt the progression of prostate cancer in men who had undergone
surgery or radiation for the disease.
Pomegranate may fight the degeneration of joint tissue that leads to painful
osteoarthritis, and may protect the
brain against oxidative stress-induced changes that can lead to Alzheimer’s.
Pomegranate extracts—alone or in combination with the herb gotu kola—help kill the
bacteria that contribute to dental plaque, while helping to heal gum disease.
Pomegranate also appears to protect the health of the skin and liver.
Dosage Information:
In the most significant clinical studies to date, a daily dose of 78 mg of punicalagins
yielded such remarkable benefits as reversing atherosclerosis, reducing high blood
pressure, and preventing the adverse cardiovascular consequences of diabetes.
Moreover, an important clinical study demonstrated that 280-375 mg of punicalagins
per day halted the progression of prostate cancer in men who had failed conventional
therapy.26 Life Extension thus recommends 78 mg of punicalagins per day for
cardiovascular protection, and 280-375 mg of punicalagins daily to promote prostate
health.
Pomegranate should not be used by pregnant and nursing women, and overuse (many
times the recommended dosage) may cause cramps, vomiting and diarrhea.
Pomegranate fruit should not be taken if you have diarrhea, and in Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM), Pomegranate fruit should not be taken with oil or fats when used to
treat parasite infections. Some people who are allergic to Pomegranate are also
allergic to other fruits, pollen or nuts.
In the Indian subcontinent 's ancient Ayurveda system of medicine, the pomegranate has extensively
been used as a source of traditional remedies.
The rind of the fruit and the bark of the pomegranate tree is used as a traditional remedy against
diarrhea, dysentery and intestinal parasites. The seeds and juice are considered a tonic for the heart
and throat, and classified as having bitter-astringent taste plus a range of taste from sweet to sour,
depending on ripeneness. Thus Pomegranate is considered a healthful counterbalance to a diet high
in sweet-fatty ( kapha or earth) components.
Especially when sweet, pomegranate fruit is nourishing for ( pitta or fire) systems and is known as a
blood builder. The astringent qualities of the flower juice, rind and tree bark are considered valuable
for a variety of purposes, such as stopping nose bleeds and gum bleeds, toning skin, (after blending
with mustard oil) firming-up sagging breasts, and treating hemorrhoids.Pomegranate juice (of
specific fruit strains) is also used as an eyedrop, as it is believed to slow the development of
cataracts.
Ayurveda differentiates between pomegranate varieties and employs them for different remedies.
Pomegranate has been used as a contraceptive and abortifacient by means of consuming the seeds,
or rind, as well as by using the rind as a vaginal suppository. This practice is recorded in ancient
Indian literature, in medieval sources, and in modern folk medicine.
Pomegranate extracts (alkaloids) are used to treat intestinal parasite infestations in some nations.
Metabolites of pomegranate juice ellagitannins ( urolithins ) localize specifically in the prostate gland,
colon, and intestinal tissues of mice, leading to clinical studies of pomegranate juice or fruit
extracts for efficacy against several diseases.
In 2013, 44 clinical trials were registered with the National Institutes of Health to examine effects of
pomegranate extracts or juice consumption on a variety of human disorders, including:

The health benefits of pomegranate can be conveniently obtained through the use of
low-cost, concentrated juices and extracts
Many food and dietary supplement makers use pomegranate phenolic extracts as
ingredients in their products instead of the juice. One of these extracts is ellagic acid,
which may become bioavailable only after parent molecule punicalagins are
metabolized.
