The Khewra mine also known as Mayo mine was named in honor of Lord Mayo.

It’s a part of salt range which was formed 800 years ago and is stretched up to 300km.

The mines were discovered accidentally, when Alexander visited the place with his armies.

Trade for the salt began in the Mughal Period.

After the Mughal Era ended, Sikhs took over the mine and Hari Singh Nalwa along with Gulab Singh started looking after the mine.

In 1872, British Government built storage areas and roads for proper mining and storage of the salt.

During 1930’s and 1940’s Birbal Sahni found the evident of Angiosperms, Gymnosperms and insects from the Cambrian Period inside the mine.
