What  is Black Pepper Extract Pure Piperine ?

Black pepper extract (bioperine) is a pure form of piperine which is derived from the fruits of 

black pepper. Piperine is an alkaloid. Black pepper is also known as Piper nigrum L and Piper 

longum L (long pepper).

 

Piperine, the active phenolic compound in black pepper extract, was studied to determine its 

anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects as well as its ability to reduce the  perception of 

pain. Piperine inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory interleukin 6, and MMP13, a 

gene  involved in the promotion of arthritis and metastasis. It reduced the production of a 

pro-inflammatory prostaglandin, even at a very low dose. When given to arthritic rats, 

piperine significantly reduced perception of pain and arthritis symptoms. Histological 

examination showed that piperine significantly reduced the inflammation in their joints.

  

What is Pure Piperine?

Piperine is the alkaloid responsible for the pungency of black pepper and long pepper, along

with chavicine (an isomer of piperine). It has also been used in some forms of traditional 

medicine and as an insecticide. Piperine from black pepper extracts as having potential to 

fight obesity by blocking the creation of fat cells (known as adipocytes).

 

Piperine is commercially available. If desired, it may be extracted from black pepper using 

dichloromethane. The amount of piperine varies from 1-2% in long pepper, to 5-9% in the 

white  and the black peppers of commerce. Further, it may be prepared by treating the solvent-free residue from an alcoholic extract of black pepper, with a solution of sodium hydroxide 

to remove resin (said to contain chavicine, an isomer of piperine) and solution of the washed, 

insoluble residue in warm alcohol, from which the alkaloid crystallizes on cooling.
