Acorus Calamus, or sweet flag, is a perennial herb, 30 to 100 cm tall. In habit it resembles the Iris. It consists of tufts of basal leaves that rise from a spreading rhizome. The leaves are erect yellowish-green, radical, with pink sheathing at their bases, sword-shaped, flat and narrow, tapering into a long, acute point, and have parallel veins. The leaves have smooth edges, which can be wavy or crimped. The sweet flag can easily be distinguished from Iris and other similar plants by the crimped edges of the leaves, the fragant odour it emits when crushed, and the presence of a spadix.

It has been used medicinally in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda for centuries. It has primarily been used to treat stress and pain. These effects may be due to the plant’s interaction with GABA receptors.
Traditionally, Acorus Calamus has been used to treat many very common cognitive and emotional imbalances. These include sadness and depression, memory loss, anxiety, insomnia, and hysteria. It can treat the symptoms of anxiety attacks, such as rapid heart rate, sweating, difficulty concentrating, and irrational fears. The plant is also thought to calm many digestive and gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea, gas, and ulcers. It can return appetite that has been diminished due to stress.
Many of these stress relieving effects can be achieved by other supplements which as completely non-toxic. Any compound which interacts with GABA can produce similar results. GABA (Gamma Aminobutyric Acid) is the body’s natural defense against stress.
GABAergic remedies either increase amounts of this neurochemical or bind with GABA receptors to stimulate them. This action limits the over-firing of nerves and related stress reactions.
