The Arctic char, Salvelinus alpinus is a member of the salmonide family. Similar to salmon and trout it has an elongated body and an adipose fin, but it has somewhat smaller scales and a distinguishable skull structure. In general char are more colourful than most other salmonids but our Irish char is white in flesh color. Arctic char are widely distributed in the Northern hemisphere. There are two types of char: migratory (anadromous) and non-migratory. The native Irish stocks are non-migratory.
