In Sardinia the consummation of the famous liquor named Mirto is widespread. This liquor is typically drunk after meals as a digestive. Everywhere, restaurants, farm houses and cafe it is possible to taste this speciality. The Mirto drink owes its taste and its colour to the myrtle plant, (Myrtus communis), found throughout Sardinia.
The myrtle plant grows in form of a bush, especially in hilly territories, and it is characterized by its berries, of purplish colour, with which the liqueur is produced. The production of myrtle happens following precise process. As first thing is to hand pick the berries without breaking the berries or the plant. You then soak them for up to six months.
During this period the solid part separates from the liquid part, at this point the liquid is sweetened. The product has no added aromas or colourings, but maintains the natural taste of the myrtle berries. Subsequently the liquor can be filtered and bottled.
