JUNIPER BERRY oil

In skincare juniper berry oil is most useful to detoxify and clear congested skin, making it excellent to help clear cellulite and to return the tissue to normal functioning.

The therapeutic properties of juniper berry oil include that of it being an antiseptic, anti-spasmodic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, emmenagogue, depurative, vulnerary and tonic.

It has some good antiseptic properties that make it useful in treating acne, as well as other skin inflammations. This makes it great for treating cellulite, as cellulite is sometime accompanied by mild inflammation.

We used it in Cellumend Cellulite Cream, as it is a natural detoxifier. Its safe yet dependable diuretic effects help to clear the skin, not only from unwanted toxins, but also from excess water in the tissue.

The essential oil used in the manufacture of cosmetics is only extracted from the ripe berries, although oil can also be extracted from the needles, wood and unripe berries - but this oil is not used in cosmetic and skin care manufacture as the content of the alpha and ß-pinene is too high.

The main chemical components of juniper berry oil are pinenes, sabinene, camphene, myrcene, alpha-phellandrene, alpha-terpinene, cineole, cymene, terpin-4-ol, bornyl acetate and cayophyllene.

Classification of juniper berry essential oil in cosmetic use

Juniper communis fruit oil is the volatile oil obtained from the berries of Juniper communis. It is classified as an essential oil and is used as a fragrance ingredient. It is also known as juniper oil.

Description : Commercial Juniper Berry Oil is produced by two methods: The best oil is steam distilled from the crushed, dried or partially dried, ripe berries. Occasionally water distillation is used. The greater part of all commercial juniperberry oil, however, is derived from the fermented fruits as a byproduct of the central European juniper brandy manufacturing. It should be noted that juniper berries contain certain amounts of fixed oil, occasionally called juniper oil. Juniperberry Oil is a water white or very pale yellow, mobile oil, having a fresh, yet warm, rich balsamic, woody sweet and pineneedle like odor. In fact, the oil of Pinus Pumilio resembles juniperberry oil very much in odor characteristics. The oil derived from the fermented fruits usually has a more turpentine like, pinene like odor and little or no balsamic sweetness. Its tenacity is inferior to that of the true oil.

Juniper berry oil is used medicinally for detoxification. It is employed to help expel build up of uric acid in the joints, and for gout, rheumatism and arthritis. Traditionally it has been used for respiratory problems, gastro-intestinal infections, and to expel worms. It is considered non-toxic and non-sensitizing, and is current in the British Herbal Pharmacoepia for rheumatic pain and cystitis.

Juniper (Juniperus communis) is an evergreen tree with bluish-green, stiff needles, small flowers, and berries. The oil is steam distilled from the berries to produce a sweet, fresh, woody-balsamic essence. It is indigenous to the circumference of the entire northern hemisphere, but the oil is mainly produced throughout Europe and Canada. There are various other species related to juniper such as cade, Virginia cedarwood, and savin. Juniper berries are used extensively in Soft drinks and in alcohol to flavor gin.

An evergreen shrub or tree up to 6m high with bluish-green stiff needles. It has small flowers and berries that are green in the first year, black in second and third. Essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the berries.
