The Kiwifruit is an oval, egg-shaped fruit ranging from about 2–3 inches long and is approximately 2 inches in diameter. The skin of the Kiwifruit is a light to medium brown, with a rough and “hairy” texture. The flesh of the fruit is usually bright green with rows of tiny black seeds, although there is a variety of Kiwifruit that has a golden flesh. The Kiwifruit plant is a woody vine that can cover an area up to 15 feet wide, 24 feet long and 12 feet high when fully mature and healthy. The leaves are large, 7-10 inches across, and are a dark green color with a leathery texture. The Kiwifruit also produces white blooms that have a slight fragrance, and are usually 1-2 inches in diameter. The plants have either male or female flowers and therefore two plants are needed, one male and one female, to produce fruit. The Kiwifruit gets its name from the Kiwi bird, a small, flightless, brown-haired bird native to New Zealand.
