The drink is known all over the world since long ago. They say that doctors and monks were the first to start producing liqueurs; they were making the drinks in search for medicinal means.
Later on, liqueurs became a lavish drink of the noblemen. The drinks were made in monasteries and estates, and their formulas are kept in secret to this day. Liqueurs were also popular during the interwar period.
A wide variety of liqueurs is available. They may be fruit-based, herbal, spice-containing, bitter, nutty and emulsive, and of different tastes and strength (alc. volume 18% to over 50%).
