Light phase Soay, British and North American alike, tend to have milk chocolate or medium brown fleece as lambs, without much highlighting. As they grow up, the tan lamb's fleece bleaches, resulting resulting in a lovely light beige-colored animal. Whether lamb or adult, however, all light phase sheep exhibit the tell-tale signs of this recessive gene: pale lips, pale eyelid rims, sometimes pale skin under the tail, and fleece fibers that are medium brown (rather than dark brown-black) at the root.
