Mandarin oranges come form two predominant sources -- Spain & China. There are two dominant varieties -- 'Satsuma' & 'Clementine' with the 'Satsuma' being the preferred variety because of its deep orange color and sweeter flavor. There are also several other varieties such as 'Valencia' from Spain or cultivated in China, such as 'Honey'. Buyers are careful to specify the variety and the percentage of broken segments in the pack as it can range 5%, 7%, 10%, 15%, 10 % all the way to 100% broken. Prices fluctuate accordingly. Old stock is also a major concern as this 'high acid' product has a short shelf life of 2, maximum 3 years. Rust is a problem from China along with detinning. There is also a concern of the source of tinplate as Japanese is far superior to the Chinese. Mandarins are packed once per year form mid-November through February. Typically Mandarins are packed for sale in light syrup in 11 oz. or 15 oz. net weight cans. There is some business in natural juice or pear juice for the health food consumers. The usual can sizes are in 11 oz. or 15 oz. tall along with #10.
