New Zealand, a land millions of years old but only inhabited by humans for the last 900. A land covered with native flora and fauna derived from the ancient podocarp forests of the great landmass Gondwanaland. Until the arrival of humans New Zealand was a country rich in bird and insect life which thrived in the ancient forests due to the lack of reptile or mammalian predators.

New Zealand flora and fauna is an example of the ancient symbiotic system, locked in time when this land separated sometime between 130 and 85 million years ago. Many of the plants in existence today still retain unique properties of plants in the ancient forests. The oils from many of these plants can be used as natural insect and animal repellents, or strong antiseptics for sterilisation of surfaces.

The manuka ( Leptospermum scoparium ) plant has become one of the most widely known of these ancient plants. The nectar collected from its flowers contain a range of compounds that are transferred to honey imparting a unique antibacterial factor. Maori, the first inhabitants of New Zealand learned about the very unique properties of the honey from the manuka plant.
