Murukku is a famous Tamil snacks in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia & Singapore. Murukku traditionally enjoyed as a treat on Deepavali (Diwali).
It is also popular among the Indian residents of Fiji, and among Indian Fijians in North America. In Indonesia, it's known as akar kelapa, and is particularly popular among Betawi. In West India, it's known as Chakli/Chakri. The names chakli, chakri are related to chakra 'a wheel'.
More recently, Murukku has become available in North America, and is made by several manufacturers in the United States. Muruku has also found its way into the UK market, distributed under the name "Chakri."
The West Indian Chakri or Chakli is normally made of gram flour and rice flour, unlike the Muruku.
