Oyster mushrooms contain many statins which help reduce cholesterol and fight heart disease. They also may play an important role in helping save the planet. Oyster mushrooms have been used in mycoremediation research. Mycoremediation is the process of using mushrooms to return polluted soil to a less contaminated state. Mushrooms produce enzymes and acids that break down organic compounds, like oils and certain toxins, poisons, and pesticides. Oyster mushrooms have been used in tests to break down almost all of the hydrocarbons in diesel contaminated soil samples . Wood fungi in general have been shown to be very effective in breaking down petroleum based contaminants in soil samples.
