Mussels grow in every ocean in the world. There are various species and sub species. There is a small business in canned smoked mussels in oil in 3.75 oz. easy open cans or 28 oz. whole in shell in brine sold in the 'specialty' section. A great majority however are sold either fresh or IQF on the half-shell. We sell the New Zealand (Perna canaliculus) variety on the half shell. These come packed in 2 lb net cartons with 12 per master carton. These are the 'Green Lip' mussel, which are grown in the pristine fjords of Marlborough Sound, South Island, New Zealand. These waters are free of any pollution and the mussels are grown to optimal sizes. These mussels are renowned for their flavor. Import product is subject to much more stringent inspection than domestic. The FDA does foreign plant inspections, requires specific product processing registrations on file and samples inbound shipments prior to distribution. Our entire packers have HACCP approved programs on file as well as ISO-9000, ISO-9002 as they must meet the inspection criteria of the entire world.
