What Makes Oats So Healthy? In January 1997, the American Food and Drug Administration agency decided that oat products could carry a label stating that oats help reduce heart disease (the FDA did maintain, however, that this is true only if the oats are combined with a low-fat diet). Several studies found that oats have high volumes of complex carbohydrates, beta-glucan, and water-soluble fiber. This boils down to the following health benefits:
- Rich Dietary Fiber: Studies suggest that water-soluble fiber helps lower total blood cholesterol by lowering bad cholesterol levels. Soluble fiber found in oats (and other foods like peas, carrots, apple, citrus fruits and barley) is also known to have positive effects on heart diseases like blood pressure.
- Weight loss: This is slightly tricky since most oat cereals contain more calories than their whole wheat or other grain counterparts, but oats release energy slowly and therefore keep us full for longer. Therefore, eating oats means fewer hunger pangs and more energy that lasts through the day.
