Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are fatty acids that cannot be constructed within an organism from other components; and therefore must be obtained from the diet. There are two families of EFAs: omega 3 and omega 6. Omega-3 fatty acids come in three main varieties: ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid), EPA (EicosoPentaenoic Acid) and DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid).
